AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A nearly $12 million remodeling project is now finished and ready to be seen.
Sunday was the open house for the recently remodeled Canyons Retirement Community.
The year-long project included drastic updates in common areas --- like a new coffee shop, the library and elevators. New kitchens were also added to the 111 apartments the facility offers to seniors. Even upgrades you can't see, like a new boiler system and fire-prevention sprinkler system were included in the remodel.
The first part of the seven story structure was built in 1924, and officials with the retirement community say it was time for an upgrade.
"We want to make sure that it was place, an affordable place for seniors for a long time so this is going to allow us to, this community open to people who need us for another 30-35 years and maybe past that," said Canyons Retirement Community Administrator, Lora Beck.
Right now, about half of the Canyon's apartment homes are occupied.
