AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Amarillo City Commissioners, decided to suspend an ordinance that would restrict registered sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of licensed daycares.

In their discussion, every commissioner mentioned that there's a lot of research that needs to be looked at, and even more that needs to be done.

Commissioner Brian Eades says there were some sharp divides among commission members about whether they should restrict where people live.

"There are certainly a lot of other things that may ne more effective such as more home visits by law enforcement, without potentially concentrating these folks in specific areas of town where it endangers more kids or additional kids, or moving them out of the city into the rural area where they're not monitored significantly."

The issue will be discussed more in the weeks ahead, and Eades says he anticipates the ordinance will become an agenda item again a month from now.
