QUAY COUNTY, N.M. -- A 15-year-old boy died at Conchas Lake State Park Tuesday afternoon after police said he jumped off the family fishing boat to swim.

The boy was identified as Griffin Walter of Sandia Park, N.M.

New Mexico State Police said it responded to the lake at around 1:15 p.m., on the report of a possible drowning. Police said they were told a 15-year-old boy had jumped off the family fishing boat and began to swim to shore.

As he was swimming toward the shore, police said he went underwater and did not return to the surface.

The boy's brother attempted to find him but was unsuccessful, police said.

Emergency responders were then called to the scene.

The New Mexico State Police Dive Team conducted a brief search and found Walter in 13 feet of water, police said.
