AMARILLO, TEXAS -- School may be out for the summer, but that isn't stopping some gifted and talented students from keeping their minds active.
Hillside Elementary has been hosting a "Camp Invention" all week for Canyon Independent School District students entering grade one through six.
It's this week's Region 16 Spotlight On Education report.
The students are using recyclable items to build special projects. From designing equipment that will help them pop a water balloon, to building shelters to survive on their make believe Planet Zach. Then there's a city wasted in pollution and they're rebuilding it together.
"I like it because you can create things that you really like to do because I like to be artistic and take apart stuff and look at what's inside it and invent things," said Elijah Limas, 6th Grade Student.
"I like to take things apart and I was surprised to find out that there were so many different parts in a VCR," said Micah, 4th Grade Student.
"On Planet Zach we've been working on problem solving and building different shelters to protect us from different kinds of weather," said Micah.
The students don't really seem to mind the fact that they're learning while they're having fun.
"The kids are getting to work in groups and really that's good for these kids. I mean they need those kinds of social skills and learn to collaborate. Lots of on hand Science, just lots of creativity and if fosters a lot of inventive thinking so it's a great curriculum," said Beth Garland, GT Facilitator.
This is the first year for the camp at Hillside Elementary.
