ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - State Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez is expected to be discharged from the hospital today after undergoing an emergency procedure to avoid a heart attack. His office says the 61-year-old senator had been experiencing chest pain Tuesday and went to the hospital.
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Defense lawyers for a New Mexico family accused of selling weapons to Mexican cartels say the federal investigation is politically-motivated. The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that the defense team says political fallout from Operation Fast and Furious prompted the Department of Homeland Security to accuse the Reese family of selling guns to individuals posing as straw purchasers. Prosecutors said in motion hearings yesterday that there's no connection between Fast and Furious and the Reese case.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A former detention officer with the Navajo Nation's Shiprock Detention Center has pleaded guilty in federal court on charges related to the sexual abuse of an inmate. Prosecutors say Sylvester Bruce admitted to one count of violating the civil rights of the victim when he touched her breasts against her will. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Bruce will be sentenced to twelve months and a day in prison.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The Santa Fe National Forest is set to hold a series of public meetings about the Southwest Jemez Mountains Landscape Restoration project. The first meeting on July 24 in Albuquerque is aimed at planning for the environmental impact statement needed on the 110,000 acres of national forest before certain treatments can be accomplished.
