FORT GIBSON, Okla. (AP) - Republican candidate Markwayne Mullin is hoping to go against history to win Oklahoma's 2nd District congressional seat in November.

The heavily Democratic district has only elected one Republican congressman since the 1920s.

Mullin, who owns a plumbing business, is facing Democratic former prosecutor Rob Wallace. Mullin has painted himself as a Washington outsider who supports limited government. Wallace has also appealed to working-class voters, saying that he relates to families who are barely making ends meet.

The 2nd District takes in suburban areas east of Tulsa and portions of the Ouachita Mountains. It has grown increasingly conservative in the past decade, enough so that President Barack Obama failed to win any county in the district in the 2008 election.

Independent Michael Fulks also will be on the November ballot.
