SWA cuts only flight from Amarillo to Albuquerque
AMARILLO -- The airline that says they LUV to fly might have just broken some hearts of folks who fly the friendly skies from Amarillo to Albuquerque.
Thursday, Southwest CEO Gary Kelly announced October was a "bang-up month" and it's likely the airline will cut capacity because of it.
Many cities will be facing cuts in the next year and Amarillo is no exception.
A Southwest Airlines spokeswoman said they've had to cut their only flight from Amarillo to Albuquerque thanks to the economy.
Olga Romero said they're cutting flights that aren't busy and not very profitable and that is one of them.
"Southwest Airlines is just optimizing it's schedule and the change affects all of our cities. It's not only Amarillo. We're cutting just one flight from Amarillo to Albuquerque and this is because we need to optimize our operations there." Said Romero.
The flight cut won't take place until March 2009 and then travelers will have to go through Dallas or Denver to get to Albuquerque.
But even American Airlines is having to make cuts.
The company said their carrier American Eagle will cut capacity by 6% this year.
In a statement released by the airline Thursday, it said, "as far as Amarillo goes American Eagle has not cut any flights".
