Canyon Police have not noticed any problems
CANYON -- Canyon law enforcement officials agree: they have seen no problems arise from a couple of restaurants serving alcohol in the otherwise dry city.
Restaurant owners had to put up quite a fight to earn special provisions allowing them to serve alcoholic beverages.
Some in the community believed it would cause big problems. But so far, that is not the case.
Business at Buffalo's Southwest Café has been strong and the restaurant owner says it is clear that even if many in the community did not support them in their quest to serve alcohol... most do now.
"It's been good. We haven't had any complaints, none whatsoever, since October 20th. We (serve alcohol using) the uni-card system and we've registered more than 8,000 people. Canyon has about 15,000 people in it so obviously not everybody's against it," said Drew Alexander, Buffalo's owner.
"They thought we were going to bring in a bar and that's not what it is," said Alexander. "It's something that's really nice and nearly everyone we talk to says 'gosh we're so glad you're here'... Canyon needed something like this."
Canyon police told us they regularly check in on the places that serve alcohol.
"In the business we call them bar checks. It's more of a community-type policing. We go in there and visit and just our presence alone will help," said Lt. Dale Davis, Canyon Police Department.
Davis says they have never had to respond to a disturbance at the restaurants serving alcohol and drunk driving and other alcohol-related violations are down.
"Looking at our stats it looks like our DUIs of adults are down this year for 2008," said Davis. "Last year, in 2007, we had 50 and this year, at the end of December, we had 34."
There is one segment of the DUI crimes that is up significantly and that is minors found driving under the influence. But police do no blame the restaurants for that increase. Davis says it is because Canyon now has a full police force.
Buffalo's Southwest Cafe told us business is going so well in Canyon that they plan to open a restaurant in Amarillo in the next year or so.
