Bush honored for efforts in women's health issues
AMARILLO -- Back in 2007, the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center renamed their Women's Health Research Institute, to the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health. Monday at the Ritz-Carlton in Dallas, the university and the institute hosted a luncheon to honor Bush for her efforts in women's health issues.
The former first lady has been a advocate for education and awareness, she was also recognized for her support of the Susan G. Comen and Heart Health Organizations.
Several members of the institute which is located in Amarillo, made it down for the event and visited with us briefly about the luncheon and what former first lady Bush has done for the institute.
"Her advocacy for us and her support through lending her name and her speaking out on Good Morning America, giving interviews and mentioning the institute and our work, as well as the national campaign for women and breast cancer and heart health is just in-measurable to our mission," said Marjorie Jenkins, Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health.
The former fist lady talked about the first year and a half of the institute, the programs and research in ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and aging issues, among other achievements.
Her support of the institute may only be trumped by her reputation and name recognition. "That name recognition lends weight to the institute and our efforts, and to our mission. Mrs.. Bush has given and lent her name and just really traveled the world in support of women's health and promoting awareness," said Jenkins.
The event was attended by roughly 3-hundred people, but the luncheon was web cast internationally.
