AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The US Senate has passed a resolution apologizing for slavery. The NAACP said it's a bittersweet time, partly because of how long it took to make this apology. Still, it's a defining one. The measure passed unanimously and also apologizes for segregation.
Floyd Anthony wishes his grandparents could have been alive to see this, because their parents were slaves, and he grew up in the heart of segregation.
He said it's important for young people to understand it's not just a history lesson. "I grew up under segregation 15 -16 years of the first half of my life. I appreciate it because segregation is very degrading and deeming to individuals," Floyd Anthony, NAACP.
The measure passed on the eve of Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of the Civil War and the release of blacks from slavery. It now goes to the house, and a formal celebration is expected next month.
