AMARILLO, TEXAS -- With schools starting up next week, the Amarillo Police Department wants you to be aware of driving in school zones.

Remember, when the orange lights are flashing the speed limit is 20 miles per hour.

If you get caught speeding in a school zone you will have to pay the price. For going just 10 miles over the speed limit you could end up paying up to $200, and if you are going up to 25 miles over it's going to cost over $350.

The APD expects heavy traffic next Monday and just wants to make sure everyone is safe.

APD's Cpl. Jerry Neufeld told ProNews 7, "We want everyone to be safe. We want to see those kids that are going to school to be safe, we want the parents driving to be safe, and those cars that are driving through you just have to pay attention, and be alert and watch out for everybody."

Neufeld adds, motorcycle police will be guarding the school zones.
