Amarillo landmark is transformed to help fight cancer
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- One of Amarillo's most recognized landmarks was transformed Sunday. The Cadillac Ranch was painted yellow with the message "LiveStrong" stenciled letter by letter across the popular tourist attraction.
The event was put on by the organizers of the 24 hours in the Canyon cycling event, an annual fundraiser for the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
Volunteers spent hours painting the cadillacs yellow before stenciling each Cadillac with a different letter to make up the LiveStrong message.
"Lance came up with this word LiveStrong years ago and really it's an empowering word for those that have been diagnosed with cancer, and really it symbolizes that it is not a definite death sentence when you're diagnosed with cancer, and it really empowers folks to do exactly what the word says, is to live strong," said Ryan Parnell, Director of 24 hours in the Canyon.
The event was done with an additional purpose in mind, a photo opportunity. The prints made will be sold as an additional fundraising effort with the proceeds going directly to the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
