Panhandle Community Services is offering weatherization help

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- President Obama has mentioned the weatherization portion of the federal stimulus plan quite often, but how does it work? How much did our area get? and How can you take advantage?

We found out that the weatherization program really targets low income families; IE. a family of four making less than 44-thousand a year.

Locally, Panhandle Community Services received around 7.5 million dollars for weatherization projects in the Texas Panhandle.

From drafty windows, to exterior doors, and even appliances; if you qualify they will check your home for energy deficiencies, and make the necessary weatherization repairs to make your home more energy efficient.

"We want to spend it on the Panhandle families that need it, we want to make sure that we're using contractors from the Panhandle, they will benefit for many years to come because once you've put on those new doors, those new windows, they're going to last for a long time," said Phyllis Cook, Panhandle Community Services.

"What we're trying to do is make sure that when we come in their home is more energy efficient when we leave therefore their bills go down and they have more money in their pockets," said Cook.

Panhandle Community services can spend up to 55-hundred dollars per home under this weatherization plan.
