AMARILLO,TEXAS -- Amarillo Police have made arrests related to several mail thefts. On January 10, police released information to make the public aware that criminals had been stealing mail from the postal service drop boxes. The stolen mail contained checks, credit applications, or other documents that suspects could use in crimes such as forgery and identity theft.
Police have since arrested four suspects that they believe to be linked to the stolen mail. Officers have recovered several pieces of the stolen mail. At least four complaints charging suspects with fraudulent use or possession of identifying information have been filed and there have been arrests based on those cases.
The investigation is continuing, and other arrests are likely.
Your best protection from this type of crime is still the same: Use only the indoor drops at the U.S. Post Office, taking advantage of the highest level of protection for your mail.
