AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Summertime is right around the corner, and to gear up the Amarillo parks and recreation department hosted their annual beach bum recruitment day in an effort to hire lifeguards for the city's 3 pools.

Recruits were required to put their swimming skills on the line to pass the pre-swim tests which include a 1-hundred yard swim, a 1-minute tread in deep water, and a retrieval dive to the bottom of the 12' deep end to grab a 10 lb. rubber brick and bring it to the surface.

Once completed, recruits applied, interviewed, and hired on the spot.

"Sometimes we try to hire early so that we can get some good candidates, try to get the best candidates in Amarillo because we want our pools to be as safe as possible. It's a great summer job, and we teach life saving skills that they can take with them for future jobs," said Jackie Wieck, Amarillo Parks and Recreation.

Amarillo has 3 pools: Southeast pool at 34th and Osage, Southwest pool at 48th and Bell, and Thompson pool at Thompson Park.

Amarillo's pools open May 30th, so if you missed Sunday's event there is still time to get that summer job. Amarillo parks and recreation are looking to hire 50 lifeguards. Simply call (806)378-9391 or check out the link provided below for more information.
