OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Gov. Brad Henry has vetoed a bill that would have prevented radio frequency identification tags from being added to driver's licenses or state identification cards.
Henry vetoed the measure Thursday, saying it wasn't in the state's best interest to prospectively ban the use of the technology that could provide future benefits.
Although the technology is not currently used by the state, supporters of the bill said it would prevent highly personal information from being available on a license.
Theoretically, information such as medical history and emergency contacts could be accessed by scanning the tags, and some countries use the chips on passports.
Opponents say the bill was the result of paranoia about government intrusion.
The bill is the eighth measure approved by the GOP-controlled Legislature and vetoed by the Democratic governor.
