BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - The mayor of Brownsville is charged with drunken driving.

Brownsville police say 57-year-old Pat Ahumada Jr. was arrested Tuesday morning when an officer saw a vehicle being driven erratically.

Ahumada, who refused sobriety tests, is free on a $3,500 personal recognizance bond.

He did not immediately respond Wednesday to a message from The Associated Press.

The mayor told the Brownsville Herald that he is "disappointed" about the incident but is "not admitting to anything." Ahumada, whose term expires next year, says he won't resign.

Ahumada in 1988 pleaded guilty to a 1987 DWI charge and was put on six months of probation.

A jury in March acquitted Ahumada of theft and other counts related to a city check to a vendor ending up in his personal account.
