AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - An audit says Austin needs to do a better job overseeing five cemeteries that it maintains.
The Austin American-Stateman reported Tuesday that auditors who visited sites in March, April and June found broken fencing, poor irrigation and some gravestones overrun with weeds.
The Parks and Recreation Department pays InterCare Corp. to maintain cemetery grounds and do administrative tasks. The $651,000 contract expires in 2016.
Parks director Sara Hensley has agreed to review the contract and devise a better monitoring system.
InterCare president Gene Bagwell said Monday that his company does good maintenance work. Bagwell says he has been working with parks officials to clarify his company's responsibilities.
The audit was sought by City Council member Randi Shade.
