ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - It's going to cost more to adopt a pet in Albuquerque, and officials in New Mexico's largest city are blaming tougher economic times.

Adoption fees went up Thursday for kittens, puppies, cats and dogs.

The city has raised prices for animals by $10 to $20, depending on the age of the pet.

The director of animal welfare for Albuquerque, Barbara Bruin, says the changes were made to cover more of the cost of caring for animals.

She also says the new fees make the point that pets have value and people need to invest in their well-being.

Adoption fees include spaying or neutering, microchipping, pet and rabies licenses, vaccinations and a wellness check from a veterinarian.
