CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - The city manager in Tucumcari has fired the city treasurer who filed a whistleblower suit after he was demoted.

City Manager Bobbye Rose declined to provide a reason for John "Marty" Garcia's July 6 firing.

Rose says Garcia was demoted in May because he violated city procedures by releasing what he called inaccurate personnel information to city commissioners. Rose says city commission requests are supposed to go through him.

Garcia filed the whistleblower complaint on July 2, the day after he was demoted from city finance director to city treasurer, costing him pay and retirement benefits. Garcia says commissioners asked him for information regarding positions of employment, how those positions were filled and information about budgeted and unbudgeted salaries and salary increases and he provided the information.
