AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Across the country Tuesday night, millions of people will be taking part in "National Night Out" as a way to fight crime.

This all began back in 1986 as a way to promote crime prevention, generate support for anti-crime programs and raise awareness between neighbors and friends as a way to fight back.

While some cities in our area such as Clovis participate, Amarillo never has observed the night out, according to Corporal Jerry Neufeld with the Amarillo Police Department.

"The National Night Out program is great, but we would prefer we do it 365 days a year, not just one night. While it's a way to kick it off for them, we want people to be vigilant every day of the week. Get off the couch, turn off the TV, go set on the front porch. You will keep your community and your neighborhood much safer."

In the Amarillo area, you can call the police department to find out how to set up neighborhood watch programs and organize prevention projects.
