A memorial service for the Oklahoma grandmother who died protecting her grandchildren will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The memorial for Sharrel Blankenbaker, will be held in the Felt public school auditorium.
The 63-year-old grandmother from Felt was fatally shot Tuesday, by a man trying to abduct her 12-year-old granddaughter from a Love's truck stop here in Amarillo. The shooting happened in front of the girl and two of the victim's other grandchildren. She died at a local hospital.
Authorities still aren't sure why Gary Don Carner did what he did. Carner, 58, went on a violent crime spree that Tuesday evening. In about 30 minutes time, Carner tried to abduct two people, killed Blankenbaker and kidnapped an 11-year-old girl, who escaped with only cuts and bruises. Carner was killed after shooting at a sheriff's deputy.
"I can't tell you why... I wish I could. I really do, I wish I could tell you why. It might help answer some questions not only for us, but the family. But there's no indication of anything...so we are as baffled as everybody else," said Potter County Sheriff Brian Thomas.
The crime spree started around 8:55 when Carner attempted to abduct a 31-year-old woman at a convenience store. He ordered the woman into his pickup at gunpoint, luckily she escaped.
Less than 10 minutes later, and less than a mile away, Carner shot Blankenbaker at the Loves truck stop and took off.
Around 9:10, Carner saw two 11-year-old girls walking along Indian Hills Road. One of the girls was able to get away, while the other was forced into his pickup at gunpoint.
About 15 minutes later, a deputy spotted the pickup and started following it. While he was waiting for backup, the truck turned, and the little girl jumped out of the vehicle at Jim Line Road north of the Bushland High School.
The suspect reportedly got out and started shooting. A Potter County deputy fired back killing the suspect.
Amarillo Special Crimes is handling the investigation and will turn over all it's findings to a grand jury.
