AMARILLO, TEXAS -- This weekend marks the 12th year that Texans can save on school related items. From now until midnight Sunday, items like school supplies, clothing, shoes, and backpacks priced less than $100 are exempt from state and local sales taxes. In some places, like Westgate Mall, shoppers may save even more.
"It gives them an opportunity to save not only on the tax, but most of the merchants do additional promotion. Whether it's a buy one get one free, buy one get one 50 percent off you know 30 percent off the sale price. You know they get that extra savings on top of an already good promotion," said Kari Holman.
She adds that aside from Black Friday tax-free weekend is the busiest weekend that they'll see all year.
Other retailers like Wal-Mart are also well prepared to handle the additional traffic.
"We make sure are staffing is right for the weekend. Second thing we do is we go back and look at all of our side counters to make sure we have the right items for the customer at the right time," said Glen Jones, Wal-Mart store manager.
Shopper Steven Burns says he's looking for the sales racks and is hoping to beat the rush.
"Sales racks, anything on sale right now is the big deal right now so if we can beat everybody just a little bit earlier then everybody gets off at five then I figure they'll start at five we're going try to beat them a little earlier today."
Westgate Mall has extended their mall hours this weekend. Friday and Saturday they will stay open until 10 p.m. and on Sunday until 7:00 p.m.
