CANYON, TEXAS -- Canyon schools followed its annual tradition of practicing safety drills on the first Friday of the school year.

Students and teachers at every campus practiced fire and severe weather drills as well as lockdowns on their campus, preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

This way, everybody in the district knows what to do and how to do it in case of an emergency.

"Each campus has an emergency response team and emergency routes designated. Obviously with new staff and students we want to make sure what we have on paper is put into play in case an emergency situation ever occurs, we don't want them caught off guard, " said CISD spokeswoman, Christy Bertolino.

It's then up to individual school administrators to practice these drills throughout the school year.
