AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Raising awareness and donations, that's the idea behind "Ride for Life". Officer Larry Frederick was struck by a drunk driver on August 21, 1982 while he was speaking to a stopped motorist.
Larry was first told by doctors that he wouldn't survive, then that he wouldn't walk again. However, Larry worked hard to prove his doctors wrong. After 110 units of blood, nine major surgeries and mandatory retirement, Larry is now spreading his message.
"Life Across America" began in June with Larry and his daughter cycling cross-country to promote the importance of blood donations. They're hoping to raise 75,000 units of blood and $110,000.
Tuesday morning, Larry stopped in Amarillo at the Coffee Memorial Blood Center where he and several other cyclist along with Amarillo Police began their journey to Bushland then to the Cadillac Ranch before heading back to Coffee Memorial Blood Center.
After the bike ride donors, volunteers and riders were treated to a BBQ. If you would like more information about Larry's journey please click on "Ride for Life". For more information on how you can donate please click on Coffee Memorial Blood Center.
