BUSHLAND, TEXAS -- Sex Education, it's an important subject one school district is pushing to keep students and their parents informed. Bushland Independent School District's superintendent has posted a newsletter on the school's website. In it are new alarming statistics showing the younger students start to date, the younger they are to become sexually active. And the school wants parents to know these numbers, and talk with their kids. Superintendent Don Wood posted the newsletter. He says after hearing new numbers released by the Center for Disease Control, he says his awareness was heightened and says parents need to get involved and talk with children about sex.
"We want them to talk to parents, parents do talk to students, students do talk to parents but we sometimes have to bridge that gap to make it feel more easily talked about," said Don Wood, Bushland ISD Superintendent.
To help bridge that gap, Wood along with CareNet have given parents those statistics in the newsletter, a number to call with questions and even some suggested reads to help ease that conversation.
"A lot of times parents don't know how to approach their own child, sometimes they think that maybe they already know and these books give them ideas on how to start dialog between the child," said Wood.
"I think you have to talk to you kids at every opportunity. when you watch a commercial that's inappropriate and something is said about it that's an opportunity for you to communicate to your kids," said Candy Gibbs, CareNet Executive Director.
Both say parents need to be aware that the age of kids becoming sexually active is getting younger and younger.
"I've been at several schools and in general, those behaviors are starting earlier and earlier, even at the age of 5th and 6th grades," said Woods.
"The statistics is if a girl begins to date in the 6th grade and by that we mean meeting at the movies, doing group things, she has a 91% chance of becoming sexually active before she graduates from high school," said Gibbs.
Gibbs adds that nationally 1 and 4 persons under the age of 25 is infected with some kind of sexually transmitted disease. Any parent can go to Bushland ISD's website to read the newsletter, see those suggested reads and statistics.
