GUYMON, OKLA. -- UPDATE: Officials say the explosion happened when some gas built up in the boiler. A maintenance worker was attempting to light the boiler to prepare for the cooler weather, when he reported seeing a flash of fire and then feeling the explosion. The worker was treated and released at the scene by fire department paramedics.
No injuries or damage were reported upstairs in any of the classrooms.
School had already been dismissed for the day when the incident occurred. The cause of the explosion hasn't been determined, and the estimated damage to the basement area will be conducted by school officials. Classes were cancelled for Wednesday in the section of the building, where the explosion happened. A state inspector is checking out the boiler to make sure it is safe.
Guymon schools superintendent, Doug Melton, said that right now it looks like school will resume as usual on Thursday.
