AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A local solider has been awarded a Silver Star for his service to our country. Staff Sergeant Brent Schneider is from Borger, and is serving in Afghanistan. Sergeant Schneider has already served one year, then was back in Amarillo for another, then this year will be the final year he is overseas.
He is one of seven soldiers recognized Tuesday for heroic actions during a time of heavy direct and indirect fire back in June and July. The Silver Star is the third highest military decoration; and while his family is very proud of him, they say he never looks at himself as a hero.
"He looks at it as he's doing his job, nothing extra, nothing special. He doesn't like any attention whatsoever. When he told me he was getting a Silver Star, he told me the most casual way, like it was nothing, because he really doesn't do the things he does for honors, he does it because it's the right thing to do," said his wife, Shaleigh Schneider.
Sergeant Schneider also earned a Bronze Star earlier this year. After his second tour to Afghanistan is over, his wife said he has another job that will keep him on U.S. soil for the next 30 years. Sergeant Schneider and his wife have a one-year-old baby boy and a four-year-old girl together.
