BORGER, TEXAS -- Tuesday, ProNews 7 reported on the upcoming meeting of the Amarillo Traffic Commission, commissioners are expected to make a recommendation to Amarillo City Commissioners relating to the banning of texting in school zones.
A law passed during the last legislative session gave cities the option of outlawing the use of cell phones in school zone, if the city's put up the correct signage as required by the law. Many cities in the Texas Panhandle have posted those signs including Childress, River Road and Borger.
But do Borger officials believe the program is effective? Lieutenant Anthony Griffin, with the Borger Police Department said he does believe its working.
Griffin said the correct signs were posted shortly after the legislation went into effect, at first the department issued warnings for those who violated the law. However, now that the grace period is over, Griffin said that citations are being written.
While Griffin said the Police Department had received no real feedback from the community, he believed people understand the reasoning behind the ordinance. He also said he believes the community realizes it's for the safety of the kids, and the fact that more and more wrecks are being caused by distracted drivers on cell phones.
Griffin could not provide an exact number of citations handed out.
