Unemployment up in Texas for November

Despite an overall increase of 19,100 jobs in the Lone Star state, the Texas Workforce Commission reports that unemployment increased slightly to 8.2 percent in November. That numbers is still below the U.S. Unemployment rate for November at 9.8 percent. This year the unemployment range in Texas has ranged between 8.1 and 8.3 percent.
"Texas employers have added jobs in eight of the last 12 months, setting the pace for the rest of the nation," said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Tom Pauken. "Most industries recorded positive growth over the year."
TWC says professional and business services gained 5,600 jobs in November, adding 61,200 from a year ago. The leisure and hospitality sectors grew by 4,700 positions last month.
Manufacturing lost 6,000 positions in November, though the total number of jobs gained overall was 22,700.
The Texas jobless rate continued to track below the national rate of 9.8 percent.
Midland maintained the state's lowest metro unemployment rate at 5.3 percent for November. Amarillo had the second lowest unemployment rate in November at 5.7 percent. The highest rate was still the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission region, at 12 percent.
