AMARILLO, TEXAS -- As 2010 comes to an end, we look back at the top stories of the year here on connectamarillo.com. The stories are listed in the order according to the number of times they were viewed.
The story that came in at number one was, Amarillo woman jumps from moving police car. In May, Stacy Mock was arrested on a parole revocation warrant. Mock was placed in the back of a patrol car, as the car was traveling down I-40 she kicked out the back window and jumped from the moving car. She sustained serious injuries and was later sent to jail.
The second top read story of the year was, Puppy mill puppies rescued. Thirty dogs were found in a puppy mill, and rescued by the folks at Critter Camp. After this story ran in our newscast all dogs were adopted within 24 hours.
In February, two men were killed, when the small multi-engine plane they were in clipped the side of the Arctic Glacier building on 47th Street, behind the United on Washington. The passenger, 57-year-old Andrew Arnold Hanson and pilot 59-year-old William Runyan Ellett were both pronounced dead at the scene.
It seems recalls were everywhere in 2010, and the one that tops our site's list was the Jose Ole taquitos recall. In March, the taquitos were recalled due to salmonella. Approximately 1.7 million pounds of ready-to-eat beef taquito and chicken quesadilla products were recalled.
A total eclipse of the moon, is what everyone was talking about this December. This year's lunar eclipse fell on the Winter Solstice, that last time that happened was 372 years ago. The next lunar eclipse will be in April 2014.
In January, the Pantex plant was placed on lockdown after two hunters got a little too close for comfort. Security is a big deal at the nation's only nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly plant, so when two men were seen carrying guns near the complex it was cause for alarm. It turned out the hunters were legally hunting in the area and were not on plant property.
In March, a high speed chase from Tulia to Canyon resulted in the death of the suspect. Police in Tulia were attempting to serve a probation violation to Isreal Leija Junior when he took off in his car towards Amarillo. The high speed chase came to an end at I-27 and Cemetery Road.
Students in Samnorwood decided to stage a protest in October and walk-out after Head Coach James Rigdon was placed on administrative leave. Despite the protest Coach Rigdon was later relieved of his coaching duties.
The CV-22 Osprey is well known here in the Texas Panhandle and its success is important to those employed by Bell Helicopter. So when another crash was reported in Afghanistan in April it was big news. Three service members and a government contractor were killed in the crash.
The Panhandle was shocked in August, after a gunman went on a crime spree, killing a grandmother in front of her grandchildren. He kidnapped a young girl, before he was gunned down by a Potter County deputy.
Gary Don Carner, shot and killed, Sharrel Blankenbaker, 63, of Felts, Oklahoma at the Loves Country Store, at 14701 I-40 West. He then, left there and abducted an 11-year-old girl. The girl made her escape by jumping from Carner's pickup after she saw a Potter County Sheriff's vehicle. Carner shot at the deputy who then shot back. Carner was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deputy was eventually cleared of any wrong doing.
Toxicology results later revealed that Carner was legally drunk when he was fatally shot, a prescription painkiller and an antidepressant were also found in his system. It was also noted that Carner had no criminal history. Investigators may never know what sparked Carner's crime spree.
