AMARILLO, TEXAS -- With spring fast approaching door to door salesman will be hitting the pavement before you know it. While there are many credible door to door companies the Amarillo Police Department wants you to be cautious when purchasing goods or services from your doorstep.
The elderly community is especially prone to become the victims of fraud.
To prevent being taken advantage of APD Sgt. Brent Barbee says if an offer sounds to good to be true, it usually is.
"Unsolicited work should always be looked at very closely. Do your best to check into the company, and use the Better Business Bureau to check records."
Barbee also recommends taking your time while making a purchase choice.
"If you feel like the salesman is putting you in a high pressure situation, that is a good time to step back and make some decisions."
Considering our recent harsh winter weather, construction salesman will also be surveying neighborhoods looking for work opportunities, and Sgt. Barbee says you need to be especially cautious of them.
"Scams and fraud in construction or roofing businesses tend to show up more regularly than in any other business. Especially if they are gypsy type business passing through."
