AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Area high school students are hard at work, studying for February 26th Pantex Science Bowl. Pronews 7 spoke with last year's winners from Amarillo High School in our weekly Region 16 Spotlight Education report. 2 teams of 5 from Amarillo High have been preparing for Saturday. That's when they, and over a hundred other students from around the Panhandle will battle for the winning title at West Texas A&M University Classroom Center.
"You can have a team of 4 people against another team of 4 people and somebody is going to say the questions and you basically have about 5 seconds to answer the question. Once you answer you can get a bonus question and then you have 25 seconds to answer that and its based on a point system like Jeopardy," said Kunal Mehta, AHS Science Bowl Team Member.
"It's a lot of fun to go see how you match up with kids around you and see how much you know, how much you've studied see your hard work pay off," said Niral Desai, AHS Science Bowl Team Member.
"Am looking forward to meeting a bunch of other smart people seeing what I know vs. what they know. I just like the competition," said William Magrogan, AHS Science Bowl Team Member.
Pantex says they host the science bowl to help foster students love for science and math. Students say, it's done just that.
"Am trying to double major in Chemical Engineering and Business when I go into college so the science bowl is really going to help me with my Chemical Engineering Degree," said Cooper Lindsey, AHS Science Bowl Team Member.
"Science Majors have so much to offer and so if Pantex can get students into science before they even think about college then it helps them get direction to their life," said Rebekah McCallops, AHS Physics Teacher.
153 students from 18 schools will be squaring off in the competition. The winning team will earn $1,000 for it's school's science program. $500 will go toward the 2nd place winner. $250 will go toward the 3rd place winner. The 1st place winners will also travel to Washington, D.C. to represent the area at the National Science Bowl competition.
