AMARILLO, TEXAS -- After being approached by some friends and thinking it over, Sandra Dunn, who also happens to be transgendered, decided to run for mayor of Amarillo.
"I thought this would be a good opportunity to run for mayor and kind of get the word out about transgendered folks and let people know that we are here in town and we do exist, but I also think I have the experience to lead the city."
Dunn, a gradate of Wayland Baptist and former business owner, used to work for the city.
"I know the workings from the lower end of the ground work of the city and I also understand the business side of it."
Dunn is in favor of single member districts and said, "if we are going to have them on the national and state level then why not here?"
Dunn says that she is in favor of the downtown design standards and the revitalization of downtown.
"We definitely need to do something, downtown has been kind of dead for a number of years."
She went on to say that she looks forward to her candidacy for mayor and all that comes with the process.
Dunn also is also a military veteran who served for more than 28 years, and is working on her masters at the University of the Rockies.
Last week the leader of Repent Amarillo, David Grisham and former Amarillo City Commissioner Paul Harpole also officially filed to run for mayor of Amarillo.
