CLOVIS, N.M. -- A Clovis woman has been arrested on felony counts of forgery all because she allegedly forged doctor's notes after her children missed more than 50 days of school.

Nicole Pitcock, 34, is being charged with two counts of Forgery, which are fourth degree felonies. She is also charged with two counts of Compulsory School Attendance Violations, petty misdemeanors.

According to a release from 9th Judicial District Attorney of N.M. Matthew Chandler, Pitcock was asked to meet with school officials four times because her children were missing school in excess .On the fourth time, she allegedly presented forged doctor excuses for her children's absences.

The case was turned into the District Attorney's Office and it was discovered that Pitcock's children had missed more than 50 days from their elementary school. A majority of those were unexcused. Chandler's office also says agents verified that Pitcock was giving the school forged doctor excusal notes to avoid the case being turned in to law enforcement officials.

"Prosecution and punishment of a parent for their childrens' chronic truancy is only exercised when all other attempts of getting a parent to take their children to school fail," Chandler said. "Not only does every child deserve an opportunity to learn to read and write, but it's also a proven fact that children who miss school regularly in their elementary years have a significantly increased chance of delinquent behavior as they grow older."
