AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Three weeks ago we here at Pronews 7, along with almost every other media outlet in town, teamed up with Toot'n Totum to help out our neighbors affected by the recent wildfires.
The outcome was a whopping result of more than $33,000.
"We were so lucky that we could be the place where people could bring all these donations, and that we're all over the town so that it made it easy for everyone. The people of Amarillo were so incredibly generous and we didn't make it happen -- they made it happen. It's important that everybody knows this is money that was given in dimes, nickels and dollars," said Melinda Batchelor, Toot'n Totum Communications Director.
The check was presented to the Red Cross along with volunteers and even a victim of the wildfire.
"Most of us are givers -- we're not receivers. The emotions that go with receiving are overwhelming and it's just not our style, but we're so thankful for friends, community and family. We're grateful, really heartfelt grateful," said Weldon Read, Palisades wildfire victim.
"When you wake up to take a shower and change clothes, its not a hard decision to think about what I'm going to be wearing this morning. Then you look around and the family heirlooms, pictures and other things that you use to have -- you realize those are the hard things to admit that you've lost."
Weldon says his lot has been cleared and the electricity has been reestablished so a new home will be going up anytime soon.
A hundred percent of the total proceeds will go to the February 27 fire victims.
