AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The state of Texas may be facing an economic crisis, but that didn't stop the people of Amarillo from giving from the bottom of their hearts.

Yesterday, The United Way of Amarillo and Canyon announced its allocations for this year to fund 39 different programs.

United Way raised more than $2,800,000 to make a community impact.

That will fund programs that will have measurable impact in areas like preparing children to succeed, ensuring basic needs and caring for people in crisis.

"It just goes to show the generous hearts within our community, that even though the financial crisis has hit our nation and people see that all around them, but they still are able to give," said Johnny Mize, Community Impact VP.

United Way had a very successful 2010 campaign, which only means good things to come for many of our local non-profits.

"I really had not heard the final results reguarding the fundraising efforts until really today and to hear that the people of the community have given more this year inspite of the economy, thats great news, because now maybe more than in the history of our own services we have more demands," said Major Tim Grider of The Salvation Army.

It also means good news for victims of the recent grassfires, including one man who spent years donating and now depends on these services.

"The agencies that we've used have just been tremendous, we were never expecting to be receivers but it's difficult for us to move forward without help, sometimes you don't realize how feeble you've become as a person thats been hit by tragedy," said Weldon Read, Grassfire Victim.

The United Way of Amarillo and Canyon has quite a history in our community.

With your generosity, it has helped our quality of life for the last 87 years.
