CANYON, TEXAS -- The Texas House of Representatives voted on a balanced budget for the 2012 - 2013 biennium.

The house budget places public and higher education as the number one priority.

There's no tax increase in the budget, which means taxes for Texas consumers won't be passed along to them, but that doesn't necessarily mean folks won't be affected by it.

"Children will be in larger classrooms, there'll be less time for teachers to give individual help to students, and it will also affect people who are on Medicaid. It will affect other programs funded by the state for the poor and the elderly," said Dr. James Calvi, WTAMU Political Science Professor.

The House also passed a bill that would tap into the Rainy Day Fund in the amount of $3.1 billion to make up for the shortfall in the current budget cycle.

The House budget also provides funding for state services in public safety and health services.
