AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The book of Acts in the bible shows that God can do amazing things through ordinary people. One organization, called Acts Community, is living off that principle.

It got a call from a homeowner who lost his home in the Palisades wildfire, and needed funding to help rebuild his home. The project already started with local neighbors and companies helping to create a new home. Lloyd Cunningham Contracting wrote up the blueprints on the house for free. The owner of that company even worked with the homeowner, Lloyd Davis, to help design a house just like the one he had.

Davis is a retired veteran. He lived alone and had no insurance when he saw his home burning in the Palisades fire. "When the fire came across the road I grabbed my water hose and tried to water on my fence and it caught on to my shed, and then it caught the corner of my house on fire. I was trying to water it, then I just dropped by water hose ran inside, got my keys, cell phone, and wallet. I barely made it to my car," said Davis. When he finally was able to come back, the only thing standing was a metal cross.

"It's just starting life over again," said Davis. To do that, his neighbors and the community are coming together. His neighbor, Andrew Rosenberg, has known Davis for 20 years, but found out just last month that he was his next door neighbor. "I said to him, I've known you for 20 years and he said yes. Then I said, well, we'll rebuild your house. We started and I called people I know and everybody chipped in and it hasn't stopped since," said Rosenberg.

So everybody started chipping in. Lloyd Cunningham started doing the construction, but the costs just kept climbing. When the funds weren't there, they called Acts Community.

"There really aren't any other organizations that deal with the long term in situations like this. There are a lot of different organizations that do the short term immediate disaster relief, but there's nobody in place to help these people out," said Chad Conner, the Acts Community President.

So Acts Community provided the funding to help get the wood to frame the house. Now it's trying to raise more funds and get more volunteers to give time and services.

Conner said, "People can see we're not just talking about raising money, we're not just talking about helping people, we're actually in the process of rebuilding."

It's not just a foundation they're building, it's a stronger community. "This is the best feeling in the world. You can't beat it. It's better than anything you'll ever take," said Lloyd Cunningham, the owner of Lloyd Cunningham Contracting. Cunningham is providing the labor to build the home for David. "It's a blessing and I wouldn't take for it, it's great to be part of," he continued.

"What a blessing, people I don't even know, strangers, what a big heart they have in giving and it's just wonderful. It's so overwhelming for me. It's indescribable," said Davis.

If everything goes according to plan, Davis can move into his new home in 30 days. The Acts Community Organization still wants to help two more families in the Palisades, but it too needs help.
