Amarillo remembers on Memorial Day

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- At face value...it's a day without work, school, or worries. But to one Gold Star Mother... the reason for Memorial Day is something she thinks about "every" day.

"You just don't ever get over it, you just learn to live with it. that's the only choice you have", said Gold Star Mother Edna Berry, who's son served in the army and was killed in 1968.

Berry says she has attended this Memorial Day Ceremony in Llano Cemetary since her son's passing in 1968. Although she is recognized as a Gold Star mother, she says the title is still something she wished she didn't have to bear.

"Well it's not something that you ask for, but I'm glad there are others that share their grief, same as I do", said Berry.

President of the Texas Panhandle War Memorial Staff Sgt. Fred Randel also lost a brother to the war in Vietnam and says, "It's a hollow feeling that you'll always have. It's just like a gold star family...it's something that'll never heal. It'll always be there. It's a void."

Both ceremonies at Llano Cemetery and the Texas Panhandle War Memorial were filled with thoughtful citizens all there for the same reason -- to praise, thank, and remember all of the fallen veterans... true heroes.
