AMARILLO, TEXAS -- When a controversy in the 1970's forced Tascosa High School to replace it's flag, school song and mascot, a new flag took it's place. But when that flag disappeared during construction years following, it was thought to be lost forever. That is... until two years ago.
"We just kept unfolding and unfolding and we had a 20 by 25 foot Tascosa Flag", says Tascosa High School Counselor, Michael Johnson.
Since being returned, it now hangs proudly in the school cafeteria for everyone to see, including former graduates.
"In the hallways as you go up and down the hall you see a lot of history about those 50 years and this is just one more piece to add to that", says 1976 Tascosa High School graduate, Edie Carter.
Now, Tascosa is taking steps to preserve this tattered antique flag and place a plaque beside it, so all Tascosa students -- past and present -- can look at it and know it's past.
"If we have a plaque beside it then they're going to know that this is the history of that flag and this is where it came from and then that bonds the graduates from 2014 along with the graduates of 1975 and all the ones in between", adds Johnson.
It's that history, of the proud Tascosa High Rebels, that they hope will continue to define them.
"We want them as they get here and experience the school itself to look at the past and understand their heritage. The actual definition of rebel as a noun is a person bringing about positive change and I think that's what you see in Tascosa is people going out into the world to make it a better place", says Carter.
