AMARILLO, TEXAS -- School maybe out for summer, but Friday, was the day school districts across the state received their annual report cards as the Texas Education Agency released the State's Accountability Ratings for the year. The Annual Accountability ratings lets parents know how their child's school districts are performing. The ratings are based on how students score on standardized tests, graduation rates, and drop-out rates. Unfortunately for this year, Amarillo ISD's overall rating dropped.

Schools are placed into one of four categories - Exemplary, Recognized, Academically Acceptable and Unacceptable. Last year, Amarillo ISD's overall rating was Recognized, this year, a one level drop to Academically Acceptable. But those for the district say they were expecting that drop after the TEA dropped the Texas Projection Measure.

"The Texas Performance Measure was a growth measure that allowed campuses and districts to get credit if statistically they could see that a third grader is going to pass by fifth grade. And that's why you see a lot of these campuses and districts across the state dropping one level, " said Rod Schroder, AISD Superintendent.

And that's not all, the district says for the first time this year, the test scores of special education students were also included in the overall results, as well as, non-English speaking students, contributing to that drop. So how does AISD compare to other campuses similar in size across the state?

"Most of the large districts that we compare to are Academically Acceptable, so we're right in line with that. We have fewer Unacceptable campuses compared to some of those districts that we looked at that are similar to us, " said Schroder.

For parents who's child attends one of the four campuses rated Academically Unacceptable, Schroder has this advice for you, look at your child's campus closely and see the good that's happening.

"Look at the full spectrum of test that were given not just that label because they will find in every case exemplary performance on these campuses and recognized performances on these campuses".

For those four schools that are rated Academically Unacceptable, Schroder says a technical assistance provider will visit those campuses and help the school find problems and work to resolve those and lift their rating for next year.
