Amarillo's unemployment rate drops slightly

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The unemployment rate in Amarillo remains the second lowest in the state after dropping a tenth of a point in the last month.
New numbers released by the Texas Workforce Commission show Amarillo's July 2011 unemployment rate at 6.2 percent. That's down from 6.3 percent in June.
A year ago in July 2010, Amarillo's unemployment rate was at 5.9 percent.
As for the state of Texas, the unemployment rate is at 8.4 percent, up 0.2 percent from June's rate. This is the same figure from July 1987. The national unemployment rats is at 9.1 percent.
Commission Chairman Tom Pauken said the state "continues to feel the effects of a stagnant national economy."
In July, Texas added 29,300 nonfarm jobs.
