AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A bizarre string of events Friday morning in east Amarillo started with a robbery, and ended with the suspect in the hospital after being involved in a wreck with a semi truck on I-40.

According to Cpl. Jerry Neufeld with the Amarillo Police, officers were called to the Payless Shoes in the 3300 block of I-40 East after a man entered the store with a gun and demanded money,

He was given a bank bag with an undetermined amount of money before he left and went across Grand St. to Cash America.

In the store were two Potter County District Attorney Investigators who drew their weapons when they saw the man with a gun.

The suspect left and ran across eastbound I-40 to the westbound lanes where traffic was moving slow and tried to open the door of a maroon Honda.

A woman driving the Honda refused to let the suspect in and he jumped onto the hood of the car and began banging on the windshield with the gun. She pulled out into traffic and was struck by a semi.

The suspect was taken to an Amarillo hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Once he is treated and released he will be booked, according to Neufeld.

The driver of the Honda was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured.

The incident remains under investigation
