AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A three-day weekend is coming up, as Labor Day brings summer to a close.

For some people, it's a weekend that means getting outside and having fun with your family.

For adventure enthusiasts who like to go off-roading, a monkey wrench may have been thrown into those plans.

The off-highway vehicle permit you need every year lets you use your vehicles off road, the problem is you can't get one right now because the state has yet to issue them.

According to B & R motorsports owner, Brian Lackey, you'll be able to buy them after the first, but they'll take five to seven business days to arrive.

"In the past they've sent them to us before hand and if we had any extra stickers that were from a previous year and it was becoming a new year we could send our stickers back and they would replace them with the new year but this year we're not able to do that."

With Labor Day weekend approaching, no permits could mean no holiday off-roading.

"We're getting a lot of phone calls from people right now wanting to purchase the off road stickers but a lot of people are wanting to go ride this weekend and I don't know if they're going to change their plans or not."

Lackey says it has changed his.

"We had plans to go out to the Canadian River but i don't think we're going to go now."

While you aren't paying for a permit yet, if you do choose to ride this weekend, Steve Lightfoot with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says, you could be issued a warning.

"They'll possibly issue a warning, they'll let folks know about what they'll need to have and where they can get it, that sort of thing, but if there's no permits available at least in other situations I know that's been the approach that they've taken."

To make things worse, one more important thing to add, the price of the permits has doubled this year.

We also spoke with the people at Sharps Motorsports.

They told us, if you do have a 2011 sticker, you won't be issued a citation, but they say if you're caught with no sticker at all, you can definitely expect to be ticketed.
