New Mexico State Land Commissioner Ray Powell says no firewood cutting will be allowed on state trust lands because of the risk of wildfires and the cost of the wood program.

Powell announced Thursday he's suspending a program that has allowed people to cut firewood for free in certain areas of New

Mexico managed by the Land Office. Typically the firewood areas were open from September to late December.

Powell said the agency determined the firewood program cost more than $75,000 a year. He said that's too expensive to continue.

Firewood cutting is allowed on some federal lands by the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service.
