AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Thousands of unwanted or neglected pets will be calling the mother road home for the next few weeks as a national adoption group is travelling Route 66 trying to help these animals find homes.
The North Shore Animal League of America is hosting the tour at Petsmart called, "Get your licks on Route 66" calling attention to the plight of pets without homes. They're promoting "mutt-igrees" instead of "pedigrees" saying that shelter animals can make great pets for anyone, according to one of their spokespersons..
"They have that connection, they have that bond, it's there and that you saved their lives, and it's really such an unconditional love."
For Karen Richardson, Board President with the local SPCA, it's great having them come to Amarillo to call attention to the problem of lost, abandoned or unwanted pets.
"They help us host another adoption event and we get a little national publicity just being on their list of stops."
Since the tour began in Flagstaff, more than 150 pets have been adopted. They're heading to Tulsa tomorrow and then on to Michigan.
