Some Kansas City schools are going to the dogs...literally. And according to the administration, the results are indisputable.
It's having a calming trend over the student body and reducing the occurences of bullying and bullying-related incidents.
According to an article inĀ USA Today, 5 years ago, No More Bullies was introduced, using dogs to teach compassion, self control and integrity. It was put into place with the director of a local animal rescue group, and is presented in one hour formats each day during the school week.
In some cases, real animals aren't even used in the classroom, with puppets used as stand ins, but the resulta are tangible.
According to research within the length of the program, suspensions decreased 55%, acts of aggression decreased 62% and acts of empathy increased 42% in classrooms where the curriculum was presented.
In a simliar move the North Shore Animal League, which was here in Amarillo about a week ago promoting it's "Mutt-i-Gree" program still in it's infancy and has already placed dogs in 900 schools in 28 different states with similiar curriculum.
No word yet if any local area schools are going to try bringing in pets to reduce bad behavior, but it looks like a dog is not only man's (or woman's) best friend, he may also be one of the best friends for students as well!
