AMARILLO, TEXAS -- This is year six of Teen Christmas, an event providing local teenagers of impoverished families with money to buy items they desperately need.

Community individuals and organizations have made donations ranging from 50 cents to thousands of dollars.  The money has gone toward vouchers the kids use to shop for their needs at Walmart.

"The neat thing about this is the fact that they learn to do economics off of it," Teen Christmas Member D.J. Stubben said.  "They have a $50 spending limit on what they can do.  They have to buy clothing and shoes and most of them fill up theirs cards with it because they know how to find value on it."

The Salvation Army has also given aid to Teen Christmas.

"Salvation Army has been a great attribute in this because they register the children," Stubben said.  "We've been able to bless three children's homes in the area, some CPS families.  We've helped some fire families."

The teenagers who shopped Saturday afternoon said they were extremely thankful and that it is nice to see there are still good people out there.  The teens' families said they are grateful, as well.

"We didn't have the money to buy the stuff for our children," Maria Luna said, "and I appreciate what our brothers and sisters are doing right here, what they are doing especially for the little ones and everybody."

According to Stubben, the event would not have been possible without the "generous" donations from the community and the help of the Salvation Army.
