AMARILLO, TEXAS -- After spending a lot of time clearing roads of snow and ice in the recent weeks, Texas Department of Transportation  crews took some time Wednesday to help the community in a different way.

This afternoon, TxDOT held their "Fill A Truck, Feed A Family" food drive. They lined up several trucks filled with food, weighed it all and shipped it off to the High Plains Food Bank. The food will go to help replenish food shelves after Christmas and eventually go to help needy families in the Panhandle.

"Here's a chance for them to give back to their communities in another way and many sections are taking part but they are offering their food to their local food banks like Stratford and those areas," said TxDOT Spokesperson, Paul Braun.

The goal was to collect 1,000 pounds of food or more but Wednesday, they raised 5,300 hundred pounds of food!
